Free Project Management System – activeCollab Now Costs Money
When I do group projects at school, I like to keep the team in check with a project management system to keep a centralized collection of work, including conversation and various files about said work. In the past I had been a big fan of the (once open-source) Base Camp clone, activeCollab. However, as many of you reading this may know, activeCollab is no longer free.
Fear not my friends! There exists a fork called Project Pier, which picks up where the the free version left off.

In my opinion, the default theme shies away from the clean cut web 2.0 freshness that was activeCollab but the folks at Project Pier were friendly enough to bundle some slick themes for those who are as nitpicky as I.

I was disappointed too when I learned about activecollab sometime last year, but optimistic now about Project Pier and the progress they’re making.

I evaluated activeCollab some time ago – while it was still free. I was looking for a developer friendly solution for project management. I ended up going with Trac – great system IMO

This is a little off-topic but since I’ve been searching for smaller Project Management programs I thought I would ask- do you know of any that are free, sync with an iPod or Blackberry and are more than just a calendar/to do list? iCal, and Sunbird aren’t what I’m looking for, the next best program I’ve found is one called Essential PIM. Any suggestions?

Andrej: I haven’t personally tried it but I’ve heard good things.
Beth: I’m sorry but that’s not a feature I was specifically looking for, though it wasn’t something that really stood out either. Syncing data with portable devices is usually a perk of pay software.

I’ve wanted an open-source project management system with a more intuitive interface for some time now. This semester, I have an Application Development class with a group project. My group project will be a Project Management System. I’ll let everyone know when it reaches a decent level of maturity.
